Our Methodology: How We Research and Score Exoskeletons

Last updated October 2, 2026

We do not own the exoskeletons we compare. Our job is to gather, verify and cross-check everything that exists on each product: spec sheets read at the source, published tests and real owner reports. The result is a synthesis that no brand page will give you. Our editor has also handled several models at trade shows and in stores in Europe, and a review says so only when it is the case. This page describes exactly how we work, without embellishment.

What we do not do

  • No lab, and no invented measurement. A short session at a trade show or in a store tells you about the harness, the adjustments, the noise and how the assist feels. It says nothing about how far a battery really goes over a day or how a product holds up over months. For those points, we cross-check the spec sheet, published tests and owner reports. You will never read “after three weeks of use” from us, and we will never present a photo as ours when it is not.
  • No crossed-out prices. Brand stores in this market run near-permanent promotions. We publish only the price we actually saw, with the date we saw it.
  • No ghost brands. If a brand has no verifiable website and no real way to buy it in the US, it does not appear here, however loud it is on social media.
  • No courtesy scores. A brand-new product that everyone is talking about goes through the same grid as the others: no bonus for being new, no penalty because it has no track record yet.
  • No brand influence. No brand pays for a score, and no brand reads a review before it is published.

How we research

Every review is built by crossing these sources:

  • Manufacturer data, read at the source (the brand’s US store, the manual) and compared across pages. When two official pages disagree, we publish both numbers and say so.
  • Published tests from specialist and general media, including when their conclusions are inconvenient.
  • Real owner reports: forums, communities and verifiable reviews. We look for what comes up again and again, not the isolated anecdote.
  • Our own handling of some models at trade shows and in stores in Europe, when it applies: harness, adjustments, noise, feel of the assist. A review mentions it only when it happened, and says which model.
  • Normalization: we convert every brand’s figures to the same units and conditions (miles and pounds first, metric in parentheses) so that comparisons mean something.

How we score

Every hip exoskeleton review uses the same grid, with weights that always add up to 100%:

CriterionWeightWhat we look at
Assist power25%Peak motor power from the spec sheet, then torque when the power figure is lower, and which joints are motorized
Real-world range20%The miles on the spec sheet with the batteries included in the box, adjusted within the limit below when published tests or owner reports show otherwise
Weight and comfort20%Worn weight with the battery, straps, heat, chafing
Value for money20%What each dollar buys compared with the direct US rival, at US store prices
Warranty and support15%What goes beyond the basics: shipping from a US warehouse, support you can reach, return terms, and a record of honoring them

Every criterion is measured against the best on the market. The tiers below are the same for every product, so a 9 here means “among the best on the market on this point”, not “good for its category”. Grid in force since October 2026.

CriterionOur tiers
⚡ Assist power10 for motorized hip and knee together, 9.5 at 1,000 W and more, 9 at 900 W, 8.5 at 800 W. Under 800 W: 8 at 25 N·m of torque or more, 7.5 at 15 N·m or more, 7 below
🔋 Real-world rangeWith the batteries in the box, from the spec sheet: 10 at 37 mi (60 km) or more, 9.5 at 28 mi (45 km), 9 at 18.6 mi (30 km), 8.5 at 15.5 mi (25 km), 8 at 12.4 mi (20 km), 7.5 at 9.3 mi (15 km), 7 below
⚖️ Weight and comfortWorn weight with the battery: 10 at 4.2 lb (1.9 kg) or less, then half a point less for every additional 0.66 lb (300 g)
💵 Value for money10 for the best value on the market; every other product is judged against its direct US rival at US store prices
🛡️ Warranty and supportScored on what goes beyond the basics. A standard warranty or a legal right earns nothing extra

A published test or consistent owner reports can move a score by half a point at most, never more, and the review gives the written reason. When a product has no direct rival, the review says how we scored its value. The overall score is the weighted average of the five criteria, shown with one decimal.

Reader reviews come through the form on each review page and are moderated before publication. We write none of them, and they never mix into our score.

How we rank

Our rankings follow the scores, nothing else. A preorder is never ranked first, and a product you cannot buy in the US is never recommended: if we mention one, it is only to say it is unavailable. Commissions, if we ever earn them, never change the order.

The prices we show

  • Every price carries the date we checked it (“price checked on Oct 1, 2026”).
  • Prices are indicative. They move fast in this market, so always confirm at the store. Shipping and sales tax can change your final total.
  • We use US store prices in US dollars.

At launch, no affiliate program is active on this site, and links to brand stores are plain links. If we are accepted into programs later (Amazon Associates, or brand programs on Impact), some links will earn us a commission when you buy, at no extra cost to you, and we will label them. Commissions will never change a score or a ranking. The full details are on our affiliate disclosure page.

Our red line: health

The exoskeletons we compare are recreation and comfort products, not medical devices, and nothing here is medical advice. We pass on a manufacturer’s claims only by attributing them to the manufacturer (“according to Hypershell”), never as our own, and we promise no health benefit. If your need involves pain, a medical condition or a loss of mobility, your first stop is a doctor or physical therapist.

Updates and corrections

A review is never frozen. New published tests, price changes and new product generations trigger an update, dated on the page. See an error or an outdated detail? Write to us through the contact page. We fix it quickly and credit you if you like.
