Sports Exoskeletons: Which One for Your Activity?

By The Editorial Team · Updated October 2, 2026

A sports exoskeleton is a powered frame worn at the hips. Small motors add a push to every stride, so your legs do less of the work on long walks, hills and hikes. For most activities, our pick is the Hypershell X Ultra. Four other models fit specific needs and budgets, and they are listed right below.

This page helps you match a model to what you actually do. For the full ranking, go to our best hiking exoskeleton guide. Our scores come from spec sheets, published tests and owner reports.

What a sports exoskeleton does

Most sports exoskeletons have a waist belt, two thigh frames and a motor at each hip, powered by a removable battery. Sensors and software follow how you move and time the push to your stride, and an app lets you pick the assist level.

The goal is less muscle effort, not more speed. Brands quote percentage savings, but those figures come from the makers, so read them as claims. These are consumer recreation products designed to assist. They are not medical devices.

What people use them for

  • Hiking. The main use. Steep climbs and long days are where extra power and a second battery pay off. See our hiking ranking.
  • Long walks. Steady miles rarely need maximum assist, which also stretches the battery. Our walking exoskeleton guide covers everyday use.
  • Stairs and hills. Hip motors push on climbs, so stairs and steep streets are a common use. We do not rank products for stairs.
  • Running uphill. A general mention only. We do not rank or recommend any model for running.

What to look at before you choose

  • Power. Peak motor power runs from 800 to 1,000 watts (W) on these five models. More power matters on steep, repeated climbs; on flat ground you may never use it.
  • Range. Spec sheets list 7.5 to 18.6 miles (12 to 30 km) per battery. Real-world range drops at high assist, so check how many batteries come in the box.
  • Weight. From 4.9 to 5.7 lb (2.2 to 2.6 kg) with a battery on board, all worn at the hips.
  • Price. From $889 to $1,499 in US stores, with the Dnsys X1 Carbon at the low end and the X Max S at the top.

Sports exoskeleton questions, answered

Is a sports exoskeleton worth it?

It depends on how far you walk or hike. If your outings are long or hilly, the added push can make them less tiring, which is why our top two picks pair strong motors with two batteries. For short, flat outings you will probably feel little difference for the price. Compare the hiking ranking before you decide.

How far does one battery last?

The spec sheets of the five models above list 7.5 to 18.6 miles (12 to 30 km) per battery. Those figures come from the makers. Real-world range is lower at high assist levels, and models that ship with two batteries roughly double the distance.

Is a sports exoskeleton a medical device?

No. These are consumer recreation products designed to assist, and they do not treat, prevent or rehabilitate any condition. If a health condition affects your walking, your joints or your heart, talk to your doctor or a physical therapist first.
